The 100 and 160 watt is a top-of-the-range SB Par-38 Narrow Flood Lamp which has been shown in tests to produce similar amounts of UVB to natural sunlight! – along with adequate heat to create a basking spot at the recommended distances, in many circumstances. The 70 watt is our top-of-the-range 70 watt Self Ballasted R80 Narrow Flood Lamp in both which has been shown in tests to produce similar amounts of UVB to natural sunlight! Along with adequate heat, the bulb creates a basking spot at the recommended distances in most circumstances (additional lighting and heating should be considered if necessary). It promotes the synthesis of Vitamin D3 and prevents metabolic bone disease, and because of the very high levels of UVA, stimulates the emotional well being and activity. This Mega-Ray original design, the only bulb to use a translucent magnesium oxide inner coating in the world, provides the necessary visible light, UVB, UVA and heat for UVB-dependent basking reptiles. For 10 years, it has been shown to have the longest lasting UVB production of any other mercury vapor bulbs available.
More UVB – But Safer
Our Mega-Ray® SB produces more UVB than other true Mercury Vapor Floods, yet is safer for owners! Our design directs the majority of the UVB from the face of the bulb, rather than diffuse it across a 180° angle.
Longer Useful Life
Using cutting edge technology coupled with five years of dedicated research and testing, we have conquered and significantly reduced the huge decay rates so common in other Mercury Vapor lamps. While other bulbs decay as much as 80%, our newly designed SB bulbs decay less than 30% over the life of the bulb. This is unseen in the industry. Most people with UVB meters are getting 18+ months use out of Mega-Ray SB bulbs.
Mega-Ray® narrow-flood is a self-ballasted True Frosted Flood Lamp. A true flood lamp, the 100 watt will disperse usable UVB in a 30″ circumference at a 20″ distance, for example.
MINIMUM distance setting of 12″ for 100 watt lamps and 18″ for 160 watt lamps will produce approximately 150-200 microwatts per square centimeter (uW/cm2) of UVB and 900-1200uW/cm2 of UVA. At 15cm, the 70 watt lamps will produce approximately 50-150 microwatts per square centimeter (uW/cm2) of UVB (rated at 4,000K with 3,000 hour life).
MAXIMUM distance setting of 20″ for 100 watt lamps and 24″ for 160 watt lamps will produce 50-75 microwatts per square centimeter (uW/cm2) of UVB. (Distance is measured from lamp face to basking spot or reptile for optimum UVB and heat.)

Which bulb should I buy? Measure the basking distance from the estimated bottom of the bulb to the top of the lizard’s back. If the distance is 6-12″ then purchase a 70 watt, 12-18″ purchase a 100 watt, over 18″ purchase a 160 watt. Only one Mega-ray is needed for UVB. Add flood lights as needed to reach the desired temperature in an enclosure area. Be sure to allow for a temperature and UVB gradient.
